Western Mail Interview

Blondie singer Debbie Harry has revealed that she enjoys lesbian sex as part of an “exotic lifestyle”, but that she still prefers men.

“I have had sexual relationships with women, yes,” she said in a recent interview with Diva. The star refused to give an exact number, but said that she had had “lots” of female relationships.

However, she went on to say that, “I am probably more heterosexual than I am homosexual, or even bisexual.”

Previously, Harry has put much of her success down to that gay community. In a previous interview with the Western Mail she said: "If you really check, two or three things happened simultaneously with the advent of our success and our exposure to the public through music: Women's lib and gay rights came of age."

She also said that, “The gay following we've developed has a lot to do with that icon thing and the imagery. And I think it sort of definitely is a real distinctive sort of chain of events.

“There was a song that we used to do called ‘Platinum Blonde’ and it was about all the great silver screen platinum blondes who were always stars or starlets and I think that they had a tremendous effect on me. They've had a tremendous effect on everyone. And what I reasoned to was their tremendous sexuality and the combination of their tremendous innocence and vulnerability was sort of unbeatable.

“If you really check, two or three things happened simultaneously with the advent of our success and our exposure to the public through music: Women's lib and gay rights came of age

However, fellow band member Clem Burke said that Blondie’s fan base was due to their appeal as a minority group." We're always kind of outsiders and obviously being gay, especially 20 years ago, made you an outsider, so maybe they can relate to that."
