We're deeply dippy about Johnny Depp at GaydarNation. He's a mega cool bad boy with a beautiful face, an acting CV with cred, a trendy nightclub in LA and a body to die for.
Despite regular scraps with the paparazzi, the press are fascinated with his love life and his 'devil may care' attitude. Women want to marry him, gay men want to shag him and straight men want to be him. He even appeared in The Fast Show at his own request!
Plus, there’s his flamboyant and over the top films! We’ll quickly pass over Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but what about the camp fest that was Pirates of the Caribbean, when Depp mixed a drunk and disorderly Keith Richards with Pepe Le Peu to create Cap'n Jack Sparrow and hey presto, a career renaissance was in full throttle.
The film made a treasure chest of money, earned Depp an Oscar nomination (he was also nominated for Finding Neverland) and was generally a huge success. So much so that they immediately went into production on not one, but two sequels!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, is out this week promising more camp opportunities, flamboyant costumes, hordes of rugged sailors and testosterone packed pirates. Shiver me timbers where’s Master Bates and Sea Man Staines when you need him.
Could The Deppster be more perfect? Time to bring on the totty and find out.
Name
John Christopher Depp II
Vitals
Johnny was born on 9 June 1963 in Kentucky.
Famous For
Quirky character acting, a string of famous fiancés and stunning good looks. Swoon.
Johnny's big break came when his mate Nicolas Cage got him a part in Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street, but his teen-idol status was born when he joined the cast of 21 Jump Street. After four years of being every girl’s pin-up and every boy’s wet dream, Johnny began establishing himself as a serious character actor. The first role he took was in John Waters' cult classic Cry Baby and he swiftly continued his new found taste for the quirky playing the lead role in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands.
Johnny's appeared in a string of alternative movies by independent directors making a name for himself as the most versatile actor working today. Some of them brilliant, like Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man and Mike Newell's Donnie Brasco and some of them not so brilliant - Roman Polanski's Ninth Gate and Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
But it was in the queer drama Before Night Falls, about the memoirs of gay Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas who was imprisoned for his sexuality, that he really made his mark on the gay audience playing a drag queen and sexy gaoler who rubbed his crotch in Arenas' face a lot!
His 2004 thriller Secret Window was adapted from a novella by Stephen King. It has many similarities with King's Misery, so there were plenty of unexpected bumps in the night - and we’re not referring to that fright of a pick up you took home after a drunken night out on the tiles!
Then there was the period drama The Libertine, about the debauched antics of an Earl, which promised so much but delivered very little actual licentious behaviour. Shame. Still he did get to utter the teasing line, “You’ve cut me down, I must confess; but in your mouth my balls must rest.” Yes, quite.
Worth Knowing
Johnny's great-grandmother was a Cherokee Indian.
John Waters has said that, "Johnny is the least homophobic hetero boy I have ever met," and Depp returned the compliment. "If I were a homosexual, I'm sure I could fall in love with John Waters in a about a half a second because he is one of the funniest, most charming, intelligent people that I've ever known. He's really a prime catch."
He's certainly been around the relationship block a few times. Married at 20 for two years to make-up artist Lori Allison, Johnny's been engaged more times than David Beckham's said, "My wife doesn't understand me." The lucky ladies include Sherilyn Fenn from Twin Peaks, Jennifer Grey from Dirty Dancing, Winona Ryder and supermodel Kate Moss.
Fond of pain, he's sported a number of tatts in his time. ‘Lily-Rose’ appears above his heart; the ‘na’ of ‘Winona Forever’ was famously removed after his break up with the light-fingered one, leaving ‘Wino Forever’; a heart with his mum's name appears on his left bicep and his not too shabby bod also adorns various skulls and crossbones.
Johnny turned down the lead role in Speed and Tom Cruise's part of Lestat in Interview With the Vampire.
Hugely into his music he played slide on a track from Oasis's Be Here Now album and his band P released their first album in 1995.
Availability
Despite never staying single for more than five seconds, there's no evidence Johnny has ever likely to defect from the land of heterosexuality. Currently madly in love with squeaky songstress Vanessa "Joe Le Taxi" Paradis he says, "I pretty much fell in love with Vanessa the moment I set eyes on hers. Very quickly I realised I couldn't live without her." Bleugh!
