The fifth series of the nail biting hunk fest that is 24 is currently showing on Sky (Sundays at 9pm), but we’re counting the minutes until it comes out on DVD so we can pause, rewind, pause, rewind on the delectable Kiefer Sutherland until we wear out the remote.

Kiefer’s definitely had a few ups and downs in his career, but as Jack Bauer he’s reminding us what a great actor he is and he’s gained a whole new set of fans. Totty Watch salutes the man who always rises to the occasion no matter how many terrorists, or bad movies, try to bump him off.

Name
Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland (there’s a mouthful!) [Mmmm I like a mouthful. Ed.]

Vitals
Born 21 December 1966, Paddington, London

Famous For
In the early years Kiefer had a reputation as a bit of a bad boy. As part of a promising group of young actors in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Brat Pack could do no wrong and for a while neither could Kiefer.

It was his turn as a vampire in The Lost Boys that first caught our attention. His portrayal of a crazed bleached blond bloodsucker got everyone’s pulses racing. A perfect set of pearly whites is so over-rated and Kiefer’s fanged frolics tapped in to our deep-rooted desires for total submission to something more powerful. Kiefer was suddenly a sex symbol.

It was on the set of The Lost Boys where he met his future nemesis, Jason Patric. Kiefer’s very public relationship with Julia Roberts, who he met while filming Flatliners, ended when she suspected he had a go-go dancing bit on the side. Julia cancelled the wedding and ran off with Jason. Nice of Jason to offer his friend’s girlfriend a shoulder to cry on, don’t you think?

When Kiefer gets fed up with making movies he plays cowboys instead and disappears for months on end to ride horses and play rodeo. He’s so good that he came first in the 1998 US Team Roping Championships. We have no idea what that is but we’re sure he looks super sexy in a pair of chaps.

He mixed his passion with his day job too when he starred in the hits Young Guns I and II alongside Charlie Sheen.

According to the New Zealand Herald, taking his clothes off in nightclubs is another one of his past times. The newspaper reported that Kiefer recently took some time out from filming River Queen in Raetihi, North Island, and joined a group of male strippers on stage whipping his shirt off to, ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’ much to the delight of the audience. Plus, if the hat in question is a large, shiny helmet, then we’ll be even more ecstatic!

Some of Kiefer’s best roles have been playing the bad guy. He was a bully in Stand By Me, a brutal marine in A Few Good Men who looked particularly good in a tight uniform, a member of the Klu Klux Klan in A Time To Kill and a murderer and rapist in An Eye for an Eye.

After a few years of lacklustre movies he’s now playing the good guy who’s allowed to be nasty at the same time. His portrayal of the beleaguered special agent Jack Bauer in over the top TV drama 24 has reinvigorated Kiefer’s career and made him an A-lister once again.

“When something like 24 happens, you bow your head and say thank you.” No thanks necessary Kiefer – respect is due.

Worth Knowing
Kiefer’s daughter is called Sarah Jude after his friends Sarah Jessica Parker and Jude Law.

He has a twin called Rachel.

He was sentenced to serve 50 hours community service after being caught drink-driving.

Kiefer has only acted alongside his father Donald twice – his first screen role in Max Dugan Returns and then in A Few Good Men.

Kiefer has won an astonishing six Golden Globes and been nominated 19 times.

Availability
Kiefer’s been around the block a few times romantically. Maybe it’s his bad boy image that attracts the ladies, it certainly does us, but he never seems to go short in the luvin’ department. At 24 he married Camelia Kath, who was his co-star on The Killing Time and was 12 years his senior and had an 11-year old daughter from a previous relationship. Then there was the marriage that never got down the aisle to Ms Roberts, and then one that did – to former model Kelly Winn, who already had two sons. They divorced a few years ago.
