Totty Watch is in the mood for some brains with our regular dose of brawn. After weeks of dreaming about illicit trysts with Hollywood superstars and perving over six-packed hunks with less intelligence than a Big Brother contestant, Totty Watch would like a serious relationship – at least until next Wednesday.
And who better to tie the knot with than indie darling Peter Sarsgaard who’s made a career out of playing the chameleon. He might not have the poster boy looks of Keanu or Brad, but he’s got more balls than all of La La Land’s leading men put together.
“I just pick the best roles that are left over, and they usually aren't the heterosexual parts.” Exactly. Totty Watch salutes Peter Sarsgaard – the thinking mans totty.
Name
Peter Sarsgaard
Vitals
Born 7 March 1971 in Illinois, USA.
Sexual Fluidity
From small parts in Unconditional Love – an odd tale of a middle aged woman played by Kathy Bates who starts an affair with Rupert Everett, the gay lover of her favourite musical performer – to playing the man who forced Alfred Kinsey to test out his own statistics on homosexuality in Kinsey, Peter has starred in numerous gay themed movies.
This week he’s having a week off from his homo inclinations and comforting a petrified Kate Hudson in the supernatural thriller The Skeleton Key. But you’re just as likely to see him bedding Campbell Scott in The Dying Gaul; being buggered in Dead Man Walking or committing rape in Boys Don’t Cry. Is there no end to this mans sexual flightiness?
It Started with a Kiss
Peter was more than happy to drop all his inhibitions (and his trews) to play Clyde Martin, one of Alfred Kinsey’s researchers in the biopic of the famous sexologist. In Kinsey, Peter seduces the pioneering chronicler of America’s sexual habits when they share a hotel room together. While undressing at the end of a long days research he stays naked a little bit longer than necessary just to make sure his mentor is interested.
Jackpot – and before you know it the couple are sharing a full-on pass-fest.
“Liam has a lot of attractive qualities. Kissing is kissing,” he quips. But that wasn’t enough for the randy little tyke, who shortly after begins an affair with Kinsey’s wife Clara.
The Hunky Nerd
Peter claims to be quite jealous of actors like Hayden Christensen who become instantly famous because of their pretty boy looks, but he put his envy to good use as a source of fuel for his role unearthing his co-star’s more devious journalistic talents in Shattered Glass.
“The fact that Hayden is this famous actor after only two big roles, and the jealousy I feel toward an actor like that when I’ve been working for a long time was absolutely perfect for the movie,” he says.
For the Love of Larry
Peter had a small part in Larry Clark’s sleazy road movie Another Day in Paradise, but his break out role came about when played the violent drunken abuser John Lotter in Boys Don’t Cry. Directed by Kimberly Peirce, it's the superb true story of Teena Brandon, a girl who wants to be a boy, and is kidnapped, raped and murdered by Lotter and his pal as a result. Hilary Swank won her first Oscar for her portrayal of the gender confused victim.
Worth Knowing
When Peter was 10 years old he collected money to save the elephants at the local zoo, but kept it all!
When he was at college he co-founded a comedy improvisation group called Mama’s Pot Roast.
Availability
Peter is going out with Jake Gyllenhaal’s big sister Maggie and they live together in New York. But he says, “On the ‘Kinsey’ scale, zero being exclusively heterosexual and six being exclusively homosexual, I'm willing to admit that I might not be a total zero. I just think it's important to pull things out there that stretch the boundaries a little bit.” We totally agree.
