Check out the Ethan Hawke gallery
Ethan Hawke was only 18 when he shot to fame in the coming of age drama Dead Poet’s Society as one of the pupil’s inspired by Robin William’s subversive teaching methods. Seems it did the trick, because ever since he’s fancied himself as a bit of a Jack Kerouac type, while the rest of us just fancied him. Period.
He’s dabbled his fingers in many an artistic pie with directing, writing two novels, playing Hamlet and even loaning out his treasured pussy cat for pop videos. As your thinking man’s Totty, Ethan prefers roles in serious films rather than popcorn puff and his latest movie is a morality tale entitled Lord of War, where Ethan’s Interpol agent plays cat and mouse with Nicolas Cage’s arms dealer.
In a recent interview with The Guardian Ethan said, “You’ve got to be willing to fall on your face once in a while. Hey, man, the whole world isn’t here to kiss your ass and tell you you’re wonderful.” Totty Watch would beg to differ.

Grunging and Grinding
When Douglas Coupland wrote a straight-faced piss-take about the dangers of ‘80s excess in 1991 called, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, grunge, getting stoned and the catchphrase “Most excellent Dude” became common parlez. Describing himself as “the Gen-X fruitcake” Ethan was at the forefront of the slacker movement and starred in numerous “Xer” films.
In Reality Bites, directed by Ben Stiller, he plays Winona Ryder’s love interest, but spends most of the film on the sofa pondering his tortured artist and pseudo-intellectual state. Then came Before Sunrise opposite French actress Julie Delphy – a rare modern day romance devoid of cheesy sentiment and cringe-worthy dialogue that effortlessly stood the test of time until its sequel arrived nearly ten years later – Before Sunset.
The Thinker and His Muse
Meeting ethereal kick boxing beauty Uma Thurman on the set of sci-fi frightener Gattaca forced Ethan to swap his grungey pants for Gucci suits. The daughter of a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies and a model turned psychotherapist, Uma was a considerable catch and he had to propose to her twice before she accepted.
But it wasn’t just Bill who was on Uma’s hit list when Ethan had a bunk up with a 22-year-old model called Jen Perzow. Everyone was out for his blood and it didn’t matter how much stubble he grew he couldn’t hide from Uma’s brother, who told reporters “I want to kill him”.
Ethan blamed his wife’s work schedule and claimed he only had an affair because he thought she was having one with Quentin Tarantino. “I thought falling in love and having a baby were my defining moments. Then I had another,” he told New York Metro. Shame it wasn’t with a man though eh Ethan?
The Walls Have Ears
After their split he headed for the famous refuge of bohemian tragedarians, the Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan. A temporary home for traumatised artists as varied as William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg to Quentin Crisp and Robert Mapplethorpe, Ethan only moved out last month after a two year stay and it was there he felt inspired enough to write and direct his first feature film, Chelsea Walls.
Worth Knowing
Ethan’s great grandfather and Tennessee Williams’ father were brothers making him the first cousin twice removed of the late great gay scribe of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire.
According to a study carried out by the Beverly Hills Institute for Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ethan has the most-desired complexion of all male celebrities. (Who cares about his skin when there are so many more interesting parts of his anatomy to survey.)
Dead Poet’s Society won 13 Oscars and Ethan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Training Day opposite Denzel Washington.
Ethan’s first acting role was in Explorers alongside River Pheonix. They became great friends.
Ethan’s cat appeared in Lisa Loeb’s music video for ‘Stay’ in 1994.
Availability
Ethan recently said, “I’m like a monk. I’ve had sex less than ten times in the last four years. I feel if someone were to touch me I’d dissolve into molecules.” Quelle catastrophe! It could be a line straight out of a Kerouac novel couldn’t it? If Ethan ever decides to go ‘On The Road’ like his hero maybe he would consider hopping off Route 66 for a couple of hours and popping into Totty Towers.
We’d be more than eager to discuss his opinion on the ‘Beat’ Generation or any other S&M preference that takes his fancy.
Give Me More
Well, his artistic credentials are sound, but as we all know it's what's outside that counts. Check out the pics below!
