Heinz Petition

Stonewall and GaydarRadio are urging Britain’s 3.6 million gay consumers to boycott Heinz after the company decided to withdraw its Deli Mayo ad, which featured kiss between two men, after complaints that it was "offensive".

The Advertising Standards Authority has received 202 complaints about the ad from viewers who said it was "offensive", "inappropriate" and "unsuitable to be seen by children".

Ben Summerskill, the chief executive of gay Stonewall, said he was “shocked” by the decision to withdraw the ad.

"We're shocked that an innocuous ad should have been withdrawn in this way. I can't imagine that Heinz would respond to protests about black people featuring in their adverts.

"Our phones have not stopped ringing with supporters who are deeply upset."

Stonewall are urging Britain’s 3.6 million gay consumers and friends to stop buying all Heinz products in protest.

“In response to Heinz’s decision to withdraw their TV ad featuring a gay kiss, Stonewall is encouraging Britain’s 3.6 million gay consumers and their friends to stop purchasing from Heinz and buy alternative products instead,” Summerskill said.

“We find Branston Baked Beans, Baxters Soups, Buitoni Spaghetti, Jardines Tomato Ketchup and Hellmann’s Mayonnaise all to be much more delicious than their Heinz counterparts and encourage people offended by Heinz’s decision to try them.”

David Muniz, commercial director at Gaydar, points out that “If Heinz had announced they were pulling the ad because it hadn’t worked creatively I could have understood it, but what they went on to say was nothing short of offensive and insensitive to the gay community."

Leading the GaydarRadio boycott campaign is presenter Simon Le Vans who said that Heinz were “gutless” and “extremely homophobic”.

The ad for Deli Mayo showed a family in their kitchen getting ready for school and their father preparing for the office. Their sandwiches are being prepared by a man with an American accent, dressed in a deli serving outfit, who they refer to as "mum".

When their father goes to get his sandwich he says, "See you tonight love" and prepares to leave. However the male ‘mum’ says, "Hey, ain't you forgetting something?", at which point the two kiss. The ‘mum’ then says, "Love you. Straight home from work, sweet cheeks."”

Nigel Dickie, director of corporate affairs for Heinz UK said they were pulling the ad because it was their “policy to listen to consumers”.

“We recognize that some consumers raised concerns over the content of the ad and this prompted our decision to withdraw it,” Dickie said.

"The advertisement, part of a short-run campaign, was intended to be humorous and we apologize to anyone who felt offended."

The Advertising Standards Authority has said it will be making a decision whether to investigate the complaints generated by the ad after just one week by the end of this week.

If you feel strongly about this issue, then please sign the petition calling on Heinz to re-instate the Deli Mayo TV ad. www.petitiononline.com/heinz/petition.html

I am appaulld that a company such as heinz should bow down to such homophobic behaviour, i had a partner with three kids and when we lived together they looked to me for those sort of things as i was at home all day they didn't call me mom, to my face anyway. I think heinz should have stood by there origional advert and kept running it i have complained to nigel Dickie 020 8848 2726 and expressed my disapointment as  a gay man and i will never buy heinz products again as i am incensed by there attitude and such a small number of complaints by comparison.

Hi i am mad that Heinz are allowing themselve to be dictated by the narrow minded out there regarding the ad.

I agree with ricks_ne  that we should all complain direct to heinz that they removed this ad.

Homophobia is still going on in this world we live in and I believe this is an ideal opportunity for us tto be heard. With enough of us complaining we should be able to out number the few that had it removed.

HERE ARE A FEW LINKS WHICH I HOPE WILL BE OF USE IN TRYING TO GET OURSELVES HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR

http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid56474.asp

http://www.hjheinz.ie/content/talk_to_us.aspx

So come on guys lets do our part and perhaps we will be able to get this ad reinstated on our screens for all to see. If that happens the world will know we will not be shut away and treated as aliens in this modern age.

I hope the links prove usefull. if anyone else has another way for us to be heard then please add a comment for us all to use.

WE ARE HERE, WE ARE QUEER AND WE WILL NOT LIVE IN FEAR

So Heinz have withdrawn an advert for their 'Deli Mayo' because some viewers have complained about a kiss between two men.

The premise of the commercial is that the Mayo is so good that it's like you have a New York Deli worker in your kitchen instead of your wife.

The Deli worker makes the children's packed lunches and then when the husband comes to collect his the Deli worker complains that he didn't get a kiss goodbye.

So the two men kiss as if the husband was kissing his wife goodbye.

Some of the viewers who complained said that that didn't want to have to explain to their children why two men were kissing.

Aside form the fact that they could have explained the 'joke' within the premise of the commercial to their children they plainly felt it inappropriate that their children might ask about homosexuality in general.

If this advert showed a different kiss other than one the viewer's children were used to would they have complained. “Mummy why is that white woman kissing a black man?” or Mummy why is that Chinese woman kissing an Indian man?”

If the children had raised these issues then the parent would have explained that all humans fall in love regardless of their colour or religion, I hope.

If, however a parent felt uncomfortable with explaining this because of any deep seated racist views and complained to Heinz I hope that Heinz would have told them where to go.

Instead, because of this ad's homosexual undertones they chose to withdraw the commercial immediately and issue an apology to any viewers who were offended.

This is gutless to say the least and extremely homophobic.

Come on Heinz stand by your morals, if you have any, and don't back down to the bigots!

Unless, of course, you'd prefer it if gay people around the world didn't buy your products in future.

It's your choice, would you rather keep your bigoted customers happy or your gay ones.

The Co-operative Bank in the UK recently turned down "Christian Voice" (a VERY homophobic organisation )after they applied for an account with them, the Co-op said they wouldn't deal with "Christian Voice" as they totally disagreed with their homophobic stance.

Hooray!

Hat's off to the Co-op !

Heinz had a great idea with their new ad then backed down under preasure after just 200 complaints (just 200 of over 16 million people living in the UK)

I'm all in favour for boycotting Heinz's products and will be complaining to them via their website -

I urge you to do the same ...

Stonewall commented the original protest against the ad was “orchestrated”. I suspect the culprits behind this are the Newcastle-based religious fanatics called Christian Institute. They are well organised, know the law, excellent lobbyists with good access to politicians, and very skilled at grabbing headlines about their hobby horses like gay marriage and abortion. And also, they're great at chivvying their fundamentalist flock into action.

And so, at the first sign of pressure from a small, intolerant but extremely vocal minority, a giant corporation caves in. What spinelessness! What is acceptable, in other words, is defined by those who shout the loudest. HJ Heinz’ apology says that expression of affection between gay people is something to be ashamed of. This will not do.

This boycott gives us a chance to let Heinz know, we too can be offended and get angry.

It is high time the gay community made a more vocal stand against bigotry. Religious fundamentalism has been the rise in the last seven years or so. And this means the gay community in particular is going to come under attack more. We must not take for granted the rights we have already gained, and defend our ground when it matters. It would do well to recall the words of Shakespeare’s Henry V: "We would not seek a battle, as we are; Nor, as we are, we say we will not shun it."*

With this in mind, show some solidarity and get your names on that petition!

Here is a copy of a letter I have sent to Heinz.  I think its time for us to boycott this brand.  How about some Heinz-ophobia T-shirts for Pride and some stickers to put on those tins of beans in the local Tescos.  They would not get away with this if it was racism!

I have been a life long consumer of Heinz.  I would never consume another Ketchup or baked bean product until now.  I am extremely disappointed that your brand has decided to cave in to the blatant homophobia which sadly still exists in our society.  I ask you this question which I implore you to honestly answer in order for you to see things from my perspective.

If you had aired and advert showing a mixed race couple who kissed, and then received several hundred complaints that certain people in society were upset about it, would you have cancelled this advert and explained that you always listen to customers?

In the 1950's this type of thing might have been acceptable, this is 2008, gay people do not choose their sexuality in the same way that people do not choose their race or disability.  We do however have the choice as consumers, and brands like Heinz have the power to change mindsets, to help to educate uneducated and bigoted people, the same people who in previous generations would have been happy for black people to be slaves and women to be denied the right to vote.

Until this decision is over turned I will not touch another one of your products, maybe if we get together we could get some stickers made and plaster the supermarkets with them,  I for one have ordered my T-shirt complete with anti Heinz slogan to wear at Gay Pride in London next weekend.

Hi

I am pleased that people are protesting against heinz and you're supporting this

However I'm dismayed that a petition about this already has 2000 signatures whereas one to Gordon to stop deporting LGBT to torture or possible death only has 2,837. [It's @ http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Stopdeportinggay/ ]

Please help promote this petition as well - we really do need all the help we can get.

cheers
