Entertainment group MAMA Group Plc, which has a holding stake in the G-A-Y brand, has bought iconic gay club Heaven.
The move means G-A-Y, which ended its long running residency at the London Astoria in July, will now have a new home at the venue, considered by many to be the first 'out' gay club in London.
The first G-A-Y run night will be Camp Attack on Friday 3 October, with the first Saturday at the club on 11 October.
Other nights at the venue, which is situated in the arches beneath Charing Cross Station, will continue to be existing Heaven nights Popcorn on Mondays and Wednesday club Work.
A new night, G-A-Y Porn Idol, is also being planned.
"Despite much speculation about the future of Heaven, it is my priority to make sure not only will Heaven be the new home for G-A-Y, but also to continue the success of other nights, allowing Heaven to be a diverse venue, making it’s Britain’s best gay club,” said G-A-Y promoter and MAMA's G-A-Y business partner, Jeremy Joseph.
"The next couple of weeks I will spend getting to re-know Heaven and will be making plans that will include a major refurb."
Heaven has been open since 1979 and has played host to performances to the likes of Divine, Eurythmics, Grace Jones and Cher, as well as a host of top DJs.
It has a capacity of over 1,600 and is the only venue in Westminster with a licence which permits it to sell alcohol 6am.
But it’s unclear as to whether the venue will continue to operate under the name of Heaven in the future. There had been fears that G-A-Y will ‘takeover’ Heaven and the iconic brand name will be lost, a concern which Joseph is keen to dismiss.
"I want to work on making a home for G-A-Y, looking after the loyal supporters of G-A-Y but also try not to alienate the customers who have supported Heaven,” says Joseph.
"This week will be spent observing & then creating a Saturday night that will secure the future for Heaven & G-A-Y."
The MAMA group includes live music, artistic services and consumer brands, and its companies manage the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand.
In 2007 the group purchased venues owned by the Mean Fiddler group, giving the group rights to the G-A-Y brand.
"Heaven is a historical venue which has been at the heart of the London nightclub scene for almost thirty years," Adam Driscoll and Dean James, co-chief executive officers of MAMA said in a statement.
"It has a phenomenal reputation, not just in London but internationally and we are delighted that the acquisition of Heaven London has enabled us to add this unique venue to our expanding live music portfolio."
"The transfer of the G-A-Y club nights to Heaven together with other popular club nights currently staged at the venue will ensure the continued growth and development of Heaven," they added.
