With the amount of cheap flight deals around, Amsterdam is the perfect weekend break. The most liberal of European cities, Amsterdam can offer everything from a thriving gay scene to historic canals and cultural attractions.
We caught up with Hugo who owns and runs the
Amsterdam Canal ApartmentsWhat made you decide to open the guesthouse?Owning a 17th century canal house is a real dream, but one that requires some practical thinking, in particular how to afford it. Dedicating a floor as a studio apartment was the way to do it! And having co-owned a B&B before, I know how much fun it can be to be the host for people from around the world.
In your opinion, what is its best feature?Location: in the heart of the old city, within walking distance from about anything in the city. Museums, opera, theatre, leather scene, trendy bars and restaurants. Not to mention the notorious `red light district.` Having your own place, own front door, and everything to make the place your temporary home.
What’s been the most memorable moment for you while running the guesthouse? The repeat visitor. That one!
And the worst?Guests who don`t realize that the fact that (soft) drugs are easy to come by, they can have nasty effects when you are not familiar with the dos and don`ts.
Is there a gay scene nearby? There are three gay areas: trendy, leather and the pure local places. All are within ten minutes walk (in different direction, unfortunately).
What is there to do in the local area?Anything really. City things, that is.
Is there an `average` gay traveller who uses your accommodation? The apartments are gay owned, and straight friendly. You will notice that only very few places are strictly gay, and why should they be in the world`s most liberal city?
What services and facilities do you offer?TV, phone, well-equipped kitchen. The apartments are self-catering. The numerous takeaways (from Tibetan to Spanish) and well-stored supermarkets around the corner will make your life easy and pleasing!
Where do you like to go when you go on holiday?Recently? South Africa, USA, Burma, France, UK. Next? Sydney and New Zealand.
