Name:
Marlene Dietrich.

Also known as:
Lola or simply Marlene.

Not to be confused with:
Greta Garbo.

Last seen:
Back in the 70s, hamming it up in a number of comeback cabaret performances. Marlene died in 1992 and is buried in Berlin.

Best feature:
Her prowess at cross-dressing, and the way she handled a cigarette.

Candy Bar or Kenric?
Ooh, tricky. Technically she is of the Kenric generation, but her enduring appeal is Candy Bar-esque,

Most likely to say:
"It`s the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter."

Least likely to say:
"Ey `oop chuck!"

Is she a sista?
Dietrich was rumoured to swing both ways with Garbo and the poet Mercedes de Acosta. She could certainly wear a suit and turn on the charm with the ladies, as shown with her girl-kiss in the 1930 movie `Morocco`.

Do mention:
Starring in nearly 100 films, Dietrich isn`t just a lesbian icon, she is a goddess in her own right. Born in Germany, she embodied glamour and high maintenance appeal. She was an outspoken opponent of Hitler during the war and made a couple of successful comebacks in later life. A star until the end, Dietrich spent her final years in seclusion, maintaining her friendships via the phone.

Don`t mention:
She was an accomplished musician who could play the saw. That`s right, the saw. Who knew?
