Vox Pops: What's Your Favourite Queer Film?
Every time I watch the film version of Torch Song Trilogy I am reminded how much I love this movie. It often brings floods of tears and there are so many moments when I get goose bumps all over.

The film has the power to talk directly to gay men and women about shared experiences of love, coming out, depression and family relationships and it has an cast including a very young Matthew Broderick and a stunning performance by the play’s writer Harvey Fierstein. If you haven’t seen this film, I urge you to watch it, you won’t be disappointed.

You can see a clip from the film at the link below.

Mmmm. Favourite gay film? I think I have to mention Beautiful Thing as it was such a seminal movie and it’s still amazing to see a mainstream film about young gay love that’s portrayed as innocent, almost sweet, without the trappings and dependence on camp, sex, Soho, drugs and general angst about coming out. Boys in the Band, Gods and Monsters and Priest would also get a look in on my list.

Maurice! I still have fantasies about Rupert Graves as the gamekeeper and it’s such an understated film of longing, disappointment and the closet that it sums up an entire generation of England and what the gay men missed. The period charms still make me want to jump into bed with Rupert Graves and James Wilby. A really beautiful film.

My favourite gay film has to be Beautiful Thing. I was lucky enough to see the original theatre production which already was one of the best plays I had ever seen but I have to admit that the film was even better as it allowed the characters to unfold even further. This film reminds me so much about my own youth, the feelings of yearning and confusion and the highs and the lows that came with it. There hasn't been any other film, play or book I have been able to identify with as much as I did with Beautiful Thing.

A close second is a little known German film called Summerstorm, which approaches the same subject of coming out and unrequited love in an incredibly funny way (yes, that's funny and German used in the same sentence! lol).

Third place belongs to In & Out starring Robin Williams and Joan Cusack. This film is so amazingly uplifting with its 'Be proud of who you are!'-attitude. It made me feel like running about town screaming on top of my lunges: "I'm gay and I'm loving it!" Naturally I didn't, if only I was brave enough. lol
