Check out our gallery of Sean Maguire From soap star to songsmith to spandexed super spunk we bet Sean Maguire never reckoned he’d end up spoofing Gerard Butler’s Leonidas in Meet the Spartans when he was committing petty crime in Albert Square during his days in Eastenders.
It’s a long way from Walford to Sparta, so Totty Watch has a little lust session over the boy who’s done a lot of travelling and made it big in Hollywood.
Name
Sean Martin Michael Maguire.
Vitals
Born 18 April 1976, Ilford, Essex.
Break Dancing In Tight Leather Knickers
Of the many actors who have crossed the tightrope from soap star to serious actor Sean must be especially pleased with himself. After stints in British soaps Grange Hill and Eastenders he’s finally made it in Hollywood as the lead in a spoof version of 300. This is undeniably an amazing career move.
Russell Crowe went from playing a small time crook in Neighbours to an international superstar with an Oscar on his mantelpiece. Adoring teacher Mike Young grew up into Guy Pearce and swapped his specs for spangly frocks in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert garnering huge critical acclaim and plenty of “Nice Legs!” accolades from builders on scaffolds. And look at George Clooney. From Dr Doug in ER to Gorgeous George with the heart in his hand of every woman between the ages of 17 and 70 and the balls of every red-bloodied male.
Shame then that Meet the Spartans is truly dreadful and makes Airplane! look like Citizen Kane. But you have to start somewhere and Sean does the best anyone possibly could with such appalling material by flexing his pecs and sashaying through the formation dances like Anton du Beke on acid.
And think of the alternatives. It could have been the other Maguire from Grange Hill that got the part – Zammo. Doesn’t bare thinking about. At least Sean has the thighs of a Greek God, literally, and one of the most defined six-packs you’ve ever seen to go with the part.
Where Did You Get That Chest, Where Did You Get That Chest?
Isn’t it a lovely one too? So perfect in fact that Totty Watch suspects it might be CGI-ed. Wash that mouth out bitch because Sean claims he was “at the gym four or five hours a day, seven days a week, with seven meals a day, protein shakes, supplements, the works.” If you say so, Sean.
Gay Friends Reunited
Although Leonidas isn’t officially gay he’s very in touch with his feminine side. Sean is no stranger to gay roles though. In US TV comedy The Class he played Kyle Lando, one of a group of 28 year olds who get together for a school reuinion. A bit like Friends ‘Reunited’ with a ‘gay one’ - albeit one who lived happily with his Brazilian boyfriend!
Sean says, “Primarily, I wanted to play a gay character; to play American was a second. On my previous show, Eve, I basically played an extension of myself, so it was really nice to have a fresh challenge, to basically build this person up from the ground.”
Before He Was Famous, Really Famous
When Sean was in Eastenders playing Aiden Brosnan, a young Irish footballer, he used to live with Arthur and Pauline Fowler. So its no wonder he turned to drugs and tried to top himself.
After he left Walford he decided an actor’s life wasn’t for him and embarked on a singing career releasing three albums and going on tour four times. Now he says, “It's safe to say my mic has been hung up and the world can breathe a sigh of relief. I won't do a reunion tour with myself for the money.” Phew!
Availability
Despite rumours on message boards that a friend of a friend of a friend once snogged Sean when they met him after a gig he’s shacked up with make up artist Julie Ettridge in La-La Land.
Not that anyone could be blamed for thinking Sean might swing both ways after watching Meet the Spartans. He might be married to one of the sexiest women in the world, Carmen Electra, but from what Totty Watch can see he seems to be having a fine old time tweaking his army’s nipples and skipping into battle.
