Check out our gallery of Michael Urie Totty Watch thinks Ugly Betty is the least interesting character in Ugly Betty. Apart from her atrocious dress sense and bizarre set of gnashers, she’s a total goody two shoes and a bit of a drip. Betty’s titular role is trumped by Wilhelmina Slater’s über-bitchy gay assistant Marc St. James.
We’re so fascinated by his Marc’s the top campness, Oscar Wilde outfits and Miss Whiplash tongue we didn’t even notice how cute he was under that permanently shocked stare and curly mop of hair. The smash hit TV series about a fashion magazine and its superficial employees wouldn’t be worth its weight in Manolo’s without Michael Urie mixing up the vinegar and arsenic.
While we wait for next series, Totty Watch can’t wait to see what the bitchy queen has up his puffball sleeves next. Well, we could just mention the recent DVD release of WTC View, which sees Urie as an unlucky in love New Yorker in search of the perfect flat mate.
Name
Michael Lorenzo Urie.
Vitals
Born 8 August 1980, Dallas, Texas.
Miaow!
“People always want me to be really bitchy to them. I’m good friends with Becky Newton (who plays Amanda) and people always want us to be catty and mean to each other or to them. Sometimes I’ll just give them a look. I’ll glare.”
Michael has said in interviews that love and understanding occasionally seeps through Marc’s shallow façade to reveal sweetness and sincerity. Totty Watch thinks it must have happened during an ad break because we can’t remember it. All of the cast, minus Betty, get to say some of the bitchiest, funniest lines in television history.
Air Kiss Me Gorge-A-Lina
The love of Marc’s life is undoubtedly his boss Wilhelmina Slater, closely followed by the dumb, but endearing, receptionist Amanda. Their friendship has spilt into real life and Michael has just bought a place next door to Becky’s house.
Marc became a little traitor when he fell for Posh Spice though. Pouty Victoria guest starred as Wilhelmina’s maid of honour and guess what, the twig-like one stole all the limelight on Willie’s big day – just like you know she would in real life.
Marc was salivating over Posh in her Vera Wang dress, much to Willie’s annoyance, but Totty Watch isn’t sure that Michael feels the same way. “You have to answer the same stupid questions,” he says. “Like, ‘I don’t care that Posh Spice is going to be in Season Two, so please don’t ask me again’.” Scared she might steal your limelight too Michael? As if she could.
It’s not difficult to see what side of the catwalk Michael’s allegiances truly lie when he tells the Guardian things like this: “I don’t really know anything about her. Her name’s not Posh though, is it? And is her last name actually Spice?” Totty Watch is so loving Michael for that.
A Piece of Bread in a Pond Full of Ducks
A bit like Mrs Beckham there are plenty of people who get Michael confused with his on-screen character. “If someone thinks that you’d be a good boyfriend for them, they think it in their head, so they’re not really flirting with me. They’re flirting with what they know of me from television, and I’m not really like that, so…” He’s in denial. Totty Watch suspects Michael is just as camp and queeny and bitchy as his character.
Availability
After episodes of shunning the idea of a boyfriend Marc has finally got himself one. Who’d have thought he would fall for the scruffy, chubby Cliff? In typical Marc style he rejected Cliff because he wasn’t fashionable enough and at least two dress sizes away from a size zero.
Cliff will be hanging around for the next series, masochist that he is and maybe Marc will turn him into a pet project and have him wearing a Dolce & Gabbana metal corset to hold in the flab before you can say “Donatella is a dog”. Unlikely.
So Is Urie Gay?
Despite rumours, Urie has denied his homosexuality and said that the dot glbt news, which had originally claimed the actor was gay, had since retracted the article.
However, Urie obviously doesn’t want to offend his many queer fans and told USA Today that even though he is single, he did not want to divulge any information on his sexual orientation or his love life: "It's not black and white; I'm still young, still figuring my life out," he says. "I love the mystery. I'm not going to lie, but I'm not going to talk about it."
